Storing Camping Gear
October 31, 2009

With the change of the seasons, some of us will be putting away our camping gear until spring. While it’s sad, we need to know the correct way to store this stuff so that when the snow melts, we can just grab it and go. Improper storage can result in mildew and weakening of your important camping gear.
Sleeping bags are best stored loosely in large cotton bags. Most of them are actually sold with these, but if not, you can purchase an all-purpose or storage bag.
Tents should be cleaned with soapy water and allowed to air dry thoroughly. Don’t try to put them through the washer and dryer — the waterproof coating will de-laminate. Store tents loosely in a breathable bag in a cool, dry place with your sleeping bags.
Tent poles are best stored fully deployed which takes the strain off the shock cord inside the poles, making it last longer.
Thanks to the Gear Guy, Douglas Gantenbein for this great info.
